In May of 2026, the One Sibuyan Initiative and the Gabriel P. Bernas Jr. Foundation partnered with the University of the Philippines Biodiversity Research Laboratory to conduct the first comprehensive biodiversity assessment in Sibuyan Island’s history. In this internationally broadcasted documentary, Howie Severino, a respected filipino journalist, covers the survey and the people and animals it sought to protect.
The Galápagos of Asia.
Rising steeply from the Sibuyan Sea at the geographic heart of the Philippine archipelago, Sibuyan Island is one of the most biologically exceptional places on the planet. Its long isolation has produced extraordinary levels of endemism, with species found nowhere else on Earth. At its center stands Mount Guiting-Guiting, one of the most technically challenging peaks in the Philippines, rising to 2,058 meters above intact protected forests that extend from ridge to reef.
Often hailed as the Galápagos of Asia, Sibuyan in fact surpasses the Galápagos and every continental country in Europe in endemic land mammal diversity, with five species found nowhere else on Earth. Relative to its size, Sibuyan is the crown jewel of Philippine biodiversity.

Sibuyan’s Unique Mammals Come Alive.
Sibuyan is home to unique mammals found nowhere else on Earth. We have spent the last year photographing them to produce never before seen images of these amazing creatures.
Nyctimene rabori (Philippine tube-nosed fruit bat); Endangered (IUCN Red List); Endemic to Negros, Cebu, and Sibuyan.
Haplonycteris sp. A; Undescribed Sibuyan Endemic Fruit bat.
Chrotomys sibuyanensis (Sibuyan Striped Shrew Rat); Data deficient (IUCN Red List); Sibuyan Endemic known from only two specimens.
Apomys sp. B; Undescribed Sibuyan Endemic forest mouse.
Rattus everetti (once described will be a new genus); Undescribed Sibuyan Endemic forest rat.
Crocidura ninoyi (Sibuyan Shrew); Data deficient (IUCN Red List); Sibuyan Endemic known from only two specimens; Named after Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., a Filipino senator.
